3 Ways To Keep Yourself Flu Free In A Small Apartment

3 Ways To Keep Yourself Flu Free In A Small ApartmentWith the arrival of cold weather comes the arrival of cold and flu season. Nothing can be more miserable than catching the flu; except when your entire family catches it. For those who live and an apartment or townhome with family members, friends, or roommates, when one person gets sick, everyone has the possibility of getting sick. There are several things you can do, however, to keep the illness limited to the one person who’s currently suffering. It takes dedication and a bit of work, but most people are willing to go the distance to avoid getting a cold, the flu, or something just as nasty.

Wash Your Hands

You’ve heard it a hundred times, but it bears repeating. Plain old soap and water has the power to kill any kind of germ you can pick up. Wash for twenty seconds (sing the “Happy Birthday Song” or “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” as you wash) then rinse fully. Do this after contact with the sick person or their room, and before you eat anything. If you can’t wash them, at least use hand sanitizer.

Quarantine The Sickie

It’s much easier to keep a child in their room while sick than it is an adult, but no matter what age the sick person is, they need to keep their distance from other apartment-mates to avoid the spread of germs. This includes staying home from work, school, and public outings. If your townhome has an extra bathroom, refrain from using the one the sick person is using.

Clean Everything. Everything.

Get your Clorox and go crazy in bathrooms and the kitchen. Grab the Lysol spray and get doorknobs, remote controls, light switches, and other objects where germs can live and spread. Put pillowcases, hand towels, and blankets through the laundry. Keep up the cleaning and sanitation for two weeks after the illness has passed to avoid contagions that have the ability to stick around and cause more trouble.
